Sen. John McCain’s image machine and the media
have successfully cast the Republican
presidential candidate as a straight-talking
maverick. Cliff Schecter’s new
book, The Real McCain: Why Conservatives
Don’t Trust Him—and Why Independents Shouldn’t,
peels away the mask. Schecter finds a trail of
expedient flip-flops on the Iraq invasion and
occupation, the religious right, campaign
finance reform, torture and other issues. McCain
emerges as a man who will do or say almost
anything to become president of the United
States. Schecter will be at the AFL-CIO in
Washington, D.C., Friday, May 30, from 6–8 p.m.
to discuss The Real McCain. Drop by if
you’re in town.
