Victory for Miners

Yesterday afternoon, the House of Representatives delivered an initial victory for USW members working in the mining industry when they voted to pass a key mine safety bill, the Supplemental Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (HR 2768).  While this bill has a large focus on underground coal mines, it also contains needed safety improvements for the metal/non-metal mines where USW members work.  In the last two years alone, there have been 78 deaths in these workplaces, a fact that sorely underscores the need for this legislation.

Thank you to the Rapid Response activists that helped bring home this victory through targeted actions at the end of last year and additional calls this week leading up to the vote.

The vote was 214-199 as follows:

All Democrats voted RIGHT (for the bill) EXCEPT the following:
Barrow (GA-12), Berry (AR-1), Boren (OK-2), Boyd (FL-2), Boyda (KS-2), Cramer (AL-5), Cuellar (TX-28), Davis (TN-4), Herseth Sandlin (SD-AL), Lampson (TX-22), Melancon (LA-3), Perlmutter (CO-7), Peterson (MN-7), Ross (AR-4), Salazar (CO-3), Udall (CO-2)

All Republicans voted WRONG (against the bill) EXCEPT the following:
Bachus (AL-6), Capito (WV-2), Gilchrest (MD-1), Graves (MO-6), LoBiondo (NJ-2), Shays (CT-4), Smith (NJ-4)

There were 17 Representatives not voting:
Baca (D-CA-43), Baker (R-LA-6), Berkley (D-NV-1), Culberson (R-TX-7), Forbes (R-VA-4), Fossella (R-NY-13), Honda (D-CA-15), Hunter (R-CA-52), Jefferson (D-LA-2), Kingston (R-GA-1), Lantos (D-CA-12), Meeks (D-NY-6), Miller (R-CA-42), Olver (D-MA-1), Paul (R-TX-14), Shimkus (R-IL-19), Tanner (D-TN-8)

Rapid Response will continue to track this legislation as it moves forward.  President Bush has promised a veto threat, so please be ready to take action again if needed!
